THE GDYNIA GŁÓWNA RAILWAY STATION The first train departed the railway station in Gdynia on 1 January 1894. The existing station building is the third design of Gdynia railway station and combines elements characteristic of socialist realism and modernism. In 2009, the station was entered into the register of monuments. It determined the direction of the refurbishment performed in the years 2010-2012. The architecture of the building was intact, although modern technical solutions were introduced. As part of the renovation, wall paintings and mosaics were restored. Some of them were discovered accidentally during the renovation of walls in a restaurant room. Layers of paint covered colourful maps: of the world, of Europe and of the Polish coast. The beautiful finding was identified as a work of Prof. J. Studnicki and his partners: the last work of a group of artists who shaped the character of the artistic life on the coast in the post-war period. In 2012, the Gdynia Główna railway station was used by 9 million passengers.
